· Cold Polishing - (one of the following)
· Grinder
· Abrasive Stone

Clean Up Supplies:

· Rubbing Alcohol, Dish Washing Detergent
· Cloth with very little lint (old T-shirt)

Step 1 - Preparation
· Clean Glass:  using Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

· Clean & Prep Kiln:
    · Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer)
    · Cut Shelf Paper to fit shelf or at least 5 inch square
    · Place Kiln Shelf Supports, Shelf and Shelf Paper into Kiln

Step 2: Decorate Base   Using just a tiny spec of Elmer's™ Glue, position the pre-cut tree in the center of the 4 x 4 piece of fusible glass. Decorate tree with little pieces of mardi gras confetti glass. Also decorate the background of the base with mardi gras confetti glass. Not we did not glue the mardi gras pieces to the background. Glue was used to hold the tree and tree decorations in place.

Tip: It is important to note that you need to make sure to touch all glass pieces by the outer edges to avoid finger oil or prints on the surface of the glass.

Step 3  - Place into Kiln: Using Fingers around outer edges of the fusible glass project or better yet wear latex gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf paper/shelf.   Leave a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) space between each project to ensure they do not touch and fuse together.
Step 4 - Tack Fuse
Use the below tack fuse firing schedule.

SMALL/MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  TACK FUSE

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   15°F/ 9°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,350°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid

If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature  and it is ready to use. Use abrasives on any rough edges you need to smooth.
Step 5 - Grind and Measure:  If necessary grind the fused tree base so that all sides are the same size.
Step 6 - Foil Glass Pieces
Use 7/32” black backed copper foil to foil the fused tree base and bevels. Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

Step 7 - Assemble and Solder
Fit all pieces together and hold in place with push pins. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil lines. Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder. Keep the pieces of glass from moving by tack-soldering each joint. Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and back of the panel. Tin the outer edge of the panel.

Step 8 – Attach Hangers
Solder two Ό” preformed metal rings on each side of the top of the panel at a solder joint as shown in picture.

Step 9 – Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. Use black patina to turn the solder lines black and rinse with water and dry. A glass wax can be used if desired to polish and enhance the glass and color of the patina. Attach chain to the hangers.
