Step 1 - Remove Glass
To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto knife.

Step 2 - Fuse Dragonfly Body
Clean Glass: Use Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

Clean & Prep Kiln Shelf: Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer) or cut a 5 inch square of hi-fire shelf paper.

Lay 6 System 96 Nuggets in a line on the kiln shelf. Make sure the nuggets touch. Full fuse the nuggets to form the dragonfly body using the Full Fuse firing schedule below.

Full Fuse using the below firing schedule.

If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature.

Step 3 - Foil Glass Pieces
Use 7/32” copper foil to foil each dragonfly wing piece. Wrap a piece of foil around the dragonfly body where the wings will be attached. See picture for placement. Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

Step 4 – Solder Dragonfly
Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foiled areas of the glass. Tin the outer edges of each wing section. Tack solder the left and right wings together separately. Solder the wings at a slight angle to the dragonfly body at the place where foil was wrapped around the dragonfly body.

Solder Wings to the Butterfly Body
Step 5 – Bend Brass Rod
Use a pliers to slightly bend the rod about 2 inches down from one end.

Step 6 – Attach Brass Rod
Solder the brass rod to the back of the dragonfly at each intersection of the brass rod and a foil line.

Step 7 – Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. Use black patina to turn the solder lines black and rinse with water and dry. Steel wool can be used to clean the brass rod.
