Yellow Iris Suncatcher

Materials:

Item# 16712
– Yellow Iris Kit

Item# 41014 – 7/32” Black Backed Copper Foil or Item# 41015 - 7/32” Copper Foil

Item# 41081 – 18g tinned copper wire

Item# 48000 – Chain, for hanging

Item# 41199 – Suction cup, small

Tools:

Item# 48023 – Burnisher/Fid

Item# 41010 – Weller 100 Soldering Iron

Item# 41100 – Flux Brush

· Step 1:  Remove Glass

To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto knife.

· Step 2:   Foil Glass Pieces

Use 7/32” black backed copper foil to foil iris pieces. Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

· Step 3:  Assemble and Solder
Arrange iris and hold in place with push pins. Use the pattern on the back of the kit as a guide if needed. Tack solder at each place where glass touches. Remove pins and solder together making sure to tin all areas of exposed foil. Solder both sides of the suncatcher.

· Step 4: Attach Hanger
Cut a piece of wire 1 ½” long. Form a loop with ends and solder to the top of the suncatcher.

· Step 5: Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. If desired, use black patina to turn the solder lines black and rinse with water and dry.
