Item# 16338P Purple Butterfly Kit
Item# 16338T Teal/Purple Butterfly Kit

Item# 41014  7/32" Black Backed Copper Foil
or
Item# 41234  7/32" Silver Backed Copper Foil

  Item# 41230 18" Brass Rod

Other Materials:
· Fid or Lathkin to burnish the foil
·
Flux & Brush

Step 1 - Remove Glass
To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto knife.

Step 2 - Foil Glass Pieces
Use 7/32” black backed copper foil to foil each piece of the bumble bee. Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

Step 3 - Assemble and Solder  Body and Bee Wings

Solder each wing separately. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil lines. Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder. Keep the pieces of glass from moving by tack-soldering each joint. Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and back of the wings. Tin the outer edges of the wings.

Step 4 – Solder Wings to the Butterfly Body
Hold each wing at a slight angle and solder to the butterfly body.

Step 5 – Bend and Attach Brass Rod
Use pliers to slightly bend the rod about 2 inches down from one end. Solder the brass rod to the back of the butterfly at each intersection of the brass rod and a solder line.
Step 6 – Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. Use black patina to turn the solder lines black and rinse with water and dry. Steel wool can be used to clean the brass rod.
