Instructions:
· Step 1: Remove Glass
To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an
X-acto Knife.
|
· Step 2: Foil Freedom Heart & Beveled Glass Pieces
Use 7/32 copper foil to foil all bevel pieces and the background pieces.
Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.
|
|
·
Step 3: Tack Solder Freedom Heart & Beveled Glass
Pieces
Fit all pieces together and hold in place with push pins. Use a flux brush to apply flux to
copper edges where glass touch each other, (Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder.) Keep the pieces of glass from moving by tack-soldering each joint.
Position
the Freedom Heart over the pattern that came with
it. If appears to be larger, retrace around the
outer edges onto the pattern.
Place
the square of tack soldered bevels over the pattern and
heart and position until you are satisfied with the
alignment. Draw on the inside of the beveled square
onto your pattern.
|
|
|
Remove the tack soldered pieces and draw a
line from center
top of each heart half and directly down from the point of
the heart to the corner of the bevel to
create a pattern.
· Step 4: Prepare Background Glass Pieces
Lay
your clear or transparent background glass over the
pattern and draw the pattern on to the glass. Cut
along all lines to create the pieces of your glass. Grind
the background pieces to fit.
Lay all pieces together and check the size.
The panel should be approximately a 8 x 8
square.
|
|
·
Step 5: Finish Foiling and Assemble with Solder
Repeat
foiling techniques and tack solder your background pieces
together with the heart and beveled square.
Hold in place with push pins to keep from moving. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil lines.
(Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder.)
Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and back of the panel. Tin the outer edge of the panel.
|
|
|
·
Step 6:
Twisted Wire Frame
Use twisted wire to frame the panel along the outer edges
of each long Bevel. Cut 4 pieces of twisted wire the length of each side of the panel. Flux twisted wire and outside edge foil. Lightly solder the wire to the panel.
·
Step 7 Attach Hanger
Cut 1 pieces of twisted wire 1 inch in length. Bend twisted wire around a pencil or dowel rod to form a circle to be used as the panels hangers. Solder a circle on one corner of the panel.
|
·
Step
8:
Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. A glass wax can be used if desired to polish and enhance the glass and
solder.
· Step 8 Attach Chain for
Hanging or Display in Metal Stand
