Step 1 - Remove Glass
To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an
X-acto knife.
|
· Step 2: Foiling the Glass
Using the 7/32” copper foil, position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”.
Use a fid or Lathkin to burnish the foil (use a hard,
thick and rounded edge of a plastic or wooden Lathkin to
press the foil flat on all sides and edge of the glass). Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

·
Step 3:
Assemble and Solder
Fit all pieces together and hold in place with push pins. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil lines. Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder. Keep the pieces of glass from moving by tack-soldering each joint. Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and back of the apple. Tin the outer edge of the apple.
·
Attach Hanger
Solder a preformed metal ring to the top of the apple between the leaf and stem.
|
|
· Optional Step 4: Attach Wire for Chimes
Form the pre-bent wind chime wire attachment at the bottom of the panel and solder in place. Clean the project with warm soapy water and flux remover. Apply black patina. Using a glass wax will give a shine to the glass and the solder and prevent oxidation. Attach a chain to the hooks.
· Optional Step 5: Attach Chimes
Using the diagram on the Wind Chime Accessory package attach wind chimes to the panel.
|
Step 5: Cleanup
Clean with soap and water. Dry.
|
Step 6: Paint #1 Teacher
Using the ink black glass paint, paint #1 Teacher on the front side of the apple
suncatcher.
