Stained Glass Spider - mosaic Gem Spider Free Stained Glass Project, Sunchcatcher

Glass Garden Spider

Materials:

· See Category: Mosaics "Gems & Nuggets

Pick from many colors and sizes to make the spider:
   Item # Gems & Nuggets

· 7/32” Copper Foil
  Item# 41015

· Copper Wire 18 Gauge
  Item# 41229

Other Materials:
· Flux
· Solder
· Black Patina (Optional)

· Step 1:  Preparations

Always clean and dry your glass before starting.
Cut 8 pieces of wire the same exact lengths between 2 & 3 inches depending up the size of your glass nugget.

· Step 2: EXAMPLE:  Foil Glass Pieces

Use 7/32” black backed copper foil to foil all shamrock pieces, Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

· Step 3:  Assemble and Solder
Bend the wire tips into an L shape at one end of each of the 8 pieces of wire.  This will provide more soldering surface to adhere the wire to the foil. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil and L wire. Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder. Tack-solder 4 wires to each side, centered.  Make sure to space even distances from each other but closely spaced.  When happy with the positioning, apply a small rounded bead of solder. Tin the outer edge of the rest of the foiled edge.

NOTE:  Because you are working with a small piece of glass you should be aware that too much heat at one time may fracture the glass gem.  Consider soldering one side on several different pieces, then come back to the first one to tack solder the other side to attach the legs.  Repeat the process for applying the beads of solder and the final tinning of the foiled edge.  This will give the glass time to cool in-between each application of heat.

· Step 4: Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. Use black patina to turn the solder legs and foil black, rinse with water and dry. A glass wax can be used if desired to polish and enhance the glass and color of the patina.
