Beveled Heart Panel

Materials:

Other Materials:
· 1/2 Square foot of glass to be used in the background, we used a pink streaky glass.
· Flux
· Solder
· Black Patina
· Chain

· Step 1: Remove Glass

To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto™ Knife.

· Step 2: Cut and Grind Background Pieces

Use the bevel heart pattern (at bottom) to cut the 3 background pieces out of a color of your choice. Grind the background pieces to fit. Lay all pieces together and check the size. The panel should be approximately a 6” x 6” square.

· Step 3: Foil Glass Pieces
Use 7/32” copper foil to foil all bevel pieces and the background pieces. Use the New Wave foil on the background pieces that surround the bevel heart. Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.

· Step 4: Assemble and Solder
Fit all pieces together and hold in place with push pins. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil lines. Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder. Keep the pieces of glass from moving by tack-soldering each joint. Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and back of the panel. Tin the outer edge of the panel.

· Step 5: Ball Chain Frame
Cut 4 pieces of ball chain the length of each side of the panel. Flux ball chain and outside edge foil. Lightly solder the ball chain to the panel.

· Step 6: Attach Chain for Hanger

Cut another piece of ball chain the desired length for hanging. Solder each end of the hanging chain to each corner of the panel.

· Step 7: Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. A glass wax can be used if desired to polish and enhance the glass and solder.
