Step 1:  Remove Glass

To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto™ Knife.

Step 2:  Cut Clear Glass Base

Cut 1 piece of fusible glass 4” x 4” for the ladybug base. Note: Use any fusible glass of your choice for base. Clear was used for this project. After the tack fuse this base will be cut into a 3 1/2” circle to fit the windchime frame.

Step 3: Preparation
Clean Glass:  Using Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

Clean & Prep Kiln Shelf: Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer) or cut an 5 inch square of shelf paper.

Step 4: Decorate Base
Using just a tiny spec of Elmer's™ Glue, position the pre-cut ladybug on the glass base. Glue the dots to the top of the ladybug wings. Sprinkle red and black frit on the base as a background being careful not to get any on the ladybug.

Tip 1: It is important to note that you need to make sure to touch all glass pieces by the outer edges to avoid finger oil or prints on the surface of the glass.

Step 5:  Place Project into Kiln

Using fingers around the outer edges of the box sides or better yet wear latex gloves pick up and place on the kiln shelf.

Step 6:  Tack Fuse

Use the below tack fuse firing schedule.

SMALL/MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  TACK FUSE

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   15°F/ 9°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,350°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 20 min. Hold Fire
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature.

Step 7:  Cut Base to Fit Windchime Frame
Place the tack fused base face down on an old towel or something soft to cushion the tacked fused side of the ladybug base. Take the frame and center it on the ladybug and draw around the inside of the frame with a marker. Cut around the lines on the fused glass base using your glass cutter. Use a grinder to grind the edges of the base and for final fitting into the frame.

Step 8:  Foil Base and Windchime Frame
Use 7/32” copper foil and position the glass in the center of the foil, apply the foil around the entire fused ladybug base. Also apply copper foil to the inside of the frame using the same method.
Step 9: Burnishing the Foil

Use a fid or Lathkin to burnish the foil (use a hard, thick and rounded edge of a plastic or wooden Lathkin to press the foil flat on all sides and edge of the glass). Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.
Step 10: Create Windchimes

Cut 10 strips of clear glass 2” x ¼”.

Step 11 - Apply Frit to Windchimes
On a paper plate mix a small amount of black and red frit. Apply Elmer’s Glue to the entire side of one of the strips cut in Step 10. Place the strip glue side down into the frit and press lightly. Turn over and set aside for drying. Repeat 4 times for a total of 5 strips.

Step 12 - Prepare Windchimes for Fusing
Cut 5 pieces of high temp wire 1 ½” long. Make a loop with each wire. Place a small drop of Elmer’s glue at both ends of a strip cut in step 10 (Not a strip that has frit on it). Place a loop on the end of the strip so the loop overhangs about ¼”. The wire loop should be sitting in glue. Place a strip covered with frit on top of this strip. Repeat four times. Let dry to ensure the high temp wire loop doesn’t slide during the full fuse phase.

Step 13 – Full Fuse Use the below tack fuse firing schedule.

SMALL PROJECTS  ·  FULL FUSE  ·  2 LAYERS

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   30°F/ 18°C 1,000°F / 535°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,400°F / 815°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 590°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 10 min. Hold Fire
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

Step 14 - Attach Windchimes to the Frame
If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature. Use light weight fishing line or string to attach the chimes. Start by tying the line or string to the left side curl on the frame. Then attach first chime. Repeat from left to right making sure to balance the distribution of the chimes  across the bottom of the frame. Enjoy!
