Step 1:  Cut Box Sides and Bottom

Cut 4 pieces of fusible glass 3” x 2 ½” for the box sides.  Cut 1 piece of fusible glass 2 ½” x 2 ½” for the box bottom. Note: Use any fusible glass of your choice for the box sides and bottom.  Clear was used for this project.

Step 2: - Preparation
Clean Glass:  Using Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

Clean & Prep Kiln Shelf: Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer) or cut an 8 inch square of shelf paper.

Step 3: Decorate Box Sides
Using just a tiny spec of Elmer's™ Glue, position a pre-cut stocking on each box side. Sprinkle red and white frit on the box side background being careful not to get any on the pre-cut stockings.

Tip: It is important to note that you need to make sure to touch all glass pieces by the outer edges to avoid finger oil or prints on the surface of the glass.

Step 4:  Place Project into Kiln

Using fingers around the outer edges of the box sides or better yet wear latex gloves pick up and place each box side on the kiln shelf.  Note: The box bottom does not get fused.

Step 5:  Tack Fuse

Use the below tack fuse firing schedule.

SMALL/MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  TACK FUSE

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   15°F/ 9°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,350°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 20 min. Hold Fire
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature.

Step 6:  Grind Box Sides and Bottom
The box side may have changed shape during the tack fuse. Use a glass grinder to grind each box side to be the same width and height. Once complete measure the width of a side and grind the box bottom to be exactly that size on all four sides.

Step 7:  Foil Box Sides and Bottom
Using the 7/32” copper foil, position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping only the sides and bottom of each box side and box bottom.  Cut a piece of the New Wave foil the length of the box side top and apply.  This gives the box a nice scalloped edge.
Step 8: Burnishing the Foil

Use a fid or Lathkin to burnish the foil (use a hard, thick and rounded edge of a plastic or wooden Lathkin to press the foil flat on all sides and edge of the glass). Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.
Step 9: Assemble Box

Using a fixture to hold two sides in place at a 90 degree angle, tack solder. Tack solder the other two sides in the same manner.

Run a bead of solder along the seam where the two box sides meet.  Cut the four Curly Q’s about ½” above the curly.  Note: These curly Q’s have two different sizes of curls on each end.  Make sure you use the same end for all four box feet.  Solder the feet into the seam.  Solder the two box sides together adding the feet.

Tin all exposed foil on the box cube and box bottom. Carefully fit the box bottom into the box cube and solder in place.

Step 10: Finishing

Clean box with soap and water. Use black patina to turn the solder lines black and rinse with water and dry.  A glass wax can be used of desired.
