Clean Up Supplies:
· Rubbing Alcohol, Dish Washing Detergent
· Cloth with very little lint (old T-shirt)
· Stained Glass Finishing Compound
to
clean residue and shine
· Step 1:
Remove Glass. To keep from breaking the precut
pieces of glass, remove them from the package
using an X-acto knife.
|
|
· Step
2: Foiling the Glass -Using the 7/32”
copper foil, position the glass in the center of
the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the
foil where the ends meet about 1/8”.
|
|
|
·
Step 3: Burnishing the Foil - Use a
fid or Lathkin to burnish the foil (use a hard,
thick and rounded edge of a plastic or wooden Lathkin
to press the foil flat on all sides and
edge of the glass). Burnishing
smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the
sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.
Hold the glass pieces in place with push pins.
|
|
·
Step 4: Fluxing
the Panel - Using a flux brush, apply the flux
to the copper
foil lines. Flux comes in a liquid or paste form.
The flux etches the copper, which allows it to
accept the solder.
·
Step 5: Soldering
- Tack-solder at the joints to keep the pieces of glass
from moving. Run a smooth run on the front and
back of the glass.
|
|
·
Step 6: Wrap the wire
(tinned copper) around a pencil tightly a few wraps and
then gradually looser for another 4 to 5 wraps. Cut wire
leaving about an inch at both ends that is straight.
·
Step 8: Solder Leaves
- Tack-solder the flat ends of the wire to the back side
of the leaves starting at the furthest end.
|
|
|
·
Step 9: Solder Leaves to Pumpkin
- Tack-solder the other flat ends of the wire to the
back side or front side of the pumpkin stem.
Attached preformed metal ring for hanging. Note: depending
upon the weight of the wire and leaves will determine the
centering of the ring for a balanced hanging later.
Run a
smooth rounded bead of solder over the entire
pumpkin. Leaves will be fine with a light
solder.
|
|
|
· Step 10:
Cleanup
Clean your artwork
completely with your flux cleaner & dry. Patina
your solder work if desired. We used a copper patina
on the pumpkin and then mixed a black patina to apply to
the stem and then more black patina for the wire and
leaves to make them darker. clean and dry again. The
final step, polish.
