Fusible Glass Project

(See Glass Tips & Tricks section: How to use Fusible Glass Decals)

Materials List for COE 90 or COE 96

· Note: Project can be done using a variety of Fusible Glass Decals or Dicro Slide ™
(but not over one another as they are both metalic based).

Fusible Glass:

COE 90:
· (Base) Large 3 inch Clear Butterfly
  Item# 27121

COE 96:
· (Base) Large 3 inch Clear Butterfly
  Item# 96121

JEWELRY FINDING:
Bail
  Item# 41114 (Gold) or Item# 41113 (Silver)

Glass Supplies & Tools:
Item# 41207 Triolyse Glue

· Fusible Glass Decals pick your pattern in Gold and/or Platinum to create you designs.  If you want Gold and Platinum, then you must use all High Fire Decals or patterns.  If all gold you could use the low fire but should not fire at the same time as the high fire decals. For best results do not mix high fire and low fire fusible decals.

    Glass Decal Category

· NOTE -Optional choice would be to use Dicro Slide ™ (Dicro Paper) instead of the decals.

· NOTE 2 - Optional Scrap Dichroic small pieces instead of decals could also be used.

Small Fused Project step-by-step instructions:

Clean Up Supplies:

· Rubbing Alcohol, Dish Washing Detergent
· Cloth with very little lint (old T-shirt)

· Step 1: Remove Glass. To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto knife.

· Step 2 - Preparation
· Clean Glass using Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

· Clean & Prep Kiln:
    · Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer)
    · Cut Shelf Paper to fit shelf
    · Place Kiln Shelf Supports, Shelf and Shelf Paper into Kiln

· Step 3: Prepare Project for Fusible Glass Decals
If you want uniform and matching designs on each wing, we suggest you cut a small pattern out of plain paper to use when cutting out decals, just remember to flip pattern over for cutting second decal in order to get a matching set.

It is important to follow the instructions that come with your decals! Keeping you glass free of oil from your fingers is important.  Cut the decals leaving a little white edge.  Place in a small amount of clean water and using a pair of tweezers take the decal out of the water when it starts to curl.  Using a tooth pick, hold slide the decal of the paper back and position on the glass where you want it. It is important to remove any air from under the decal.  Some people like to use a squeegee but if you use too much water the decal may slide around (if yes blot with the corner of a paper towel)  You can also use the side of your tooth pick to smooth out the decal.  Let dry completely, over night is preferable, before the final firing. Even the smallest amount of moisture can steam the decal from the glass surface, resulting in a partial transfer.

TIP: Dicro Slide ™ and Scrap Dichroic is less sensitive in application and can be fired the same day.

· Step 4: Note:  It is important to note that you need to make sure to touch all glass pieces by the outer edges to avoid finger oil or prints on the surface of the glass from your fingers when using decals.

· Step 5:  Place into Kiln Using Fingers around outer edges of the fusible glass project or better yet wear latex gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf paper/shelf.   Leave a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) space between each project to ensure they do not touch and fuse together.

· Step 6: Kiln Firing Process- Full Fuse

SMALL PROJECTS  ·  FULL FUSE  ·  2 LAYERS

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   30°F/ 18°C 1,000°F / 535°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,400°F / 815°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 590°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 10 min. Hold Fire
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

· Step 7: Firing your Fusible Glass Decals

This project used the GOLD LOW FIRE Glass Decals. Ramp up your kiln slowly while vented, until your reach 1,000 °F, then close your kiln and fire until temperature reaches 1,075 to 1,140 °F.  Ramping slowly is much better than a quick fire to allow plenty of time for burn off and venting.  Then turn off kiln and leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature

See-> HOT GLASS TIPS (for Decals)

- Keep your decals stored in a dry place on their side and not on top of one another.

- Keep your Hi Fire Glass Decals and your Low Fire Glass Decals separately stored, perhaps in well marked envelopes.

- Mark each envelop with the colors/types as well.  Example:  Gold - Low Fire Glass Decals,  Platinum - High Fire Glass Decals, etc.

See-> HOT GLASS TIPS (for Dicro Slide ™)

· Step 8: Prepare Fused Project
If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature  and it is ready to use. Use abrasives on any rough edges you need to smooth.  If you do find you need to do a lot of abrasive or use a grinder you may need to refire the finished piece to polish the edges.

· Step 9:  Drill Hole for Ring
We suggest you read the Glass Tips and Tricks for "Drilling Glass Projects

If you want to hang the butter fly, drill a hole at least 1/4 inch inward at the deep V of the upper wings and/or lower wings if you want to use more than one piece of monofilament to hang or a Jump Ring(s).

Option to drilling:

Select a large Jewelry Bail  color (Gold or Silver).  Apply Triolyse glue to bail and position on back of glass, centered.  It is best to wait 24 hours for a solid cure and more strength before hanging.
