NOTE: This project could be made using only
glass
glue if the red glass is cut to fit the frame
accurately.
Step 1:
Remove white circles of
glass. To keep from breaking the precut
pieces of glass, remove them from the package
using an X-acto knife.
|
|
Step 2:
· Lay frame on top of the rectangle of
Red Fusible
glass. Using a maker, draw an outline on the
inside of the frame onto the glass. Cut glass 1/8
of an inch larger than the pattern to allow for fusing
shrinkage and perhaps some minor grinding which you may
need to refine your cut.
Step 3:
· Clean Glass
using Alcohol or Dish Washing
Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of
paper or cardboard.
· Clean & Prep Kiln:
· Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer)
· Cut Shelf Paper to fit shelf
· Place Kiln Shelf Supports, Shelf
and Shelf Paper into Kiln
Step 4: · Using a very tiny drop
of Elmers Glue, place white circles on the glass making
sure not to be right to the bottom edge as you need to
leave room for foiling and sodering. ·
Use scrap glass and cut to shape a hat and scarf. ·
Break Glass Noodles and/or dichro into small pieces to fit where
you want them like the scarf, nose, etc. and then use a
very tiny drop of glue to hold position. Step
5: · Fire your piece in the kiln
using the chart below. (Adjust pending how many layers
of glass)

Step 6:
· Grind out edge just enough to make smooth enough to
foil.
Step 7: Foiling the Bevel - This is
the same process as the Frame kit. Using the 7/32” copper foil, foil
all edges of the Bevel frame.
Step 8: Burnishing the Foil - Use a
fid or Lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing
smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the
sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.
Hold the glass pieces in place with push pins.
|
|
|
Step 9: Fluxing
the Panel - Using a flux brush, apply the flux
to the copper
foil lines. Flux comes in a liquid or paste form.
The flux etches the copper, which allows it to
accept the solder.
Step 10: Soldering the Panel & Cleanup
- Tack-solder at the joints to keep the pieces of glass
from moving. Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and
back of the panel. Solder panel to the quick frame.
|
|
Step
11:
Soldering the Ball Chain Edge
Tack-solder at various points around the panel pulling the ball chain tight before each tack. After the ball chain has been tacked to the panel fill in open spaces with solder between the panel and the ball chain to form a nice frame. Attach hooks and a chain for hanging.
