US Glass Flag Waving - Free Fused Glass Project

Fused Glass US Flag
Waving Wind Chime

Our First official American
          13 Star Flag

Overall Project Dimensions:
Approximately: 8 1/2 " W x 15 " L

SPECIAL NOTE: Proper handling of a hanging flag requires the star section of the flag to be positioned in the upper left.  The very first official American flag has 13 stars, 7 Red Strips and 6 White Strips.  The dimensions used in this project are to keep it fairly proportionate.

Materials List:

Recommend a minimum of of 12" x 6" piece of Red Transparent, Royal Blue Transparent and White Opaque Fused Glass.  If you are not great at cutting strips of glass, then make sure you have a 12" x 12" piece of the white and red in case of breakage.  All fusible glass in the COE of your choice.

1 full 12" x 12" piece of clear fusible glass in the COE of your choice.

Materials List for COE 90

Step 1: Preparation

A US Flag will have 7 Red Stripes & 6 White Stripes:

White Glass: Cut (6) 5/8" x 8 1/2" and Cut (3) 5/8" x 6 3/8" strips
Red Glass: Cut (7)  5/8" x 8 1/2" and Cut (3) 5/8" x 6 3/8" strips
Blue Glass: 4 5/8" x 6 3/8"

Run a grinder over your pieces to make sure they are even and all sides.

Clean Glass: Using Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

Prep Mold: Apply a good coat of kiln wash to the mold set aside to dry.
Clean & Prep Kiln Shelf: Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer) or cut an 8 inch square of shelf paper.

Cut all wire the same length for the 2 hanging loops at the top and small loops that will hang the wavy strips to the top portion.  Bend all wires to make hanging loops with straight ends that will be fused between the 2 layers of glass.

Step 2:  Position Glass:

SPECIAL NOTES:  We full fused the upper pieces on to one piece of clear glass.  For the wind chimes you have to decide how many wind chimes you want by the number of stripes you fuse together on a piece of clear glass.  We suggest that you always use a minimum of one red and white strip together for the smallest wind chime. Our project has one wind chime section of 4 stripes (hung directly under the stars) and 3 other wind chime sections of 3 stripes each.

Cut 1 piece of clear 8 1/2 inches wide by 6 3/8 inches long for the top portion.  Using a small spec of Elmer's glue on the outer edges of the blue glass square position it to the far upper/left on the clear glass.  Then start with a white and then a red strip until there are 3 white and end with a red strips of glass.  Finally, position each of the 13 white stars on the blue glass and let dry.

After  you are sure the glue has dried, if you want stars to show on the back, flip the piece over and position 13 more stars exactly over the ones on the front side.

Slide you largest 2 pieces of wire loop you made between the colored glass and the clear glass.  We suggest that you do not put them to close the ends of the total width for better strength.  (See back side below.)

Then position each of the smaller pieces of wire loops to hold the stripes that will become the rippled wind chimes.

Step 2: Put together the longer stripes (to become your rippled wind chimes): Cut your strips of clear glass to the size you want for each combined stripe and using small specs of Elmer's glue on the outer edges and insert the wire loops at the top end trying to line up with the loops hanging from the top section and matching up the stripes.

FRONT SIDE (already fused)
BACK SIDE (already fused)

Step 3:  Place Project into Kiln: Using Fingers around outer edges of the fusible glass project or better yet wear latex gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf paper/shelf.  Make sure you leave at least a 1/2 inch or more between glass items.

We suggest that you fire the upper portion first.  Then match up the wire loops for the Wind Chime strips with the upper portion a second time before firing.

Step 4:  Full Fuse firing schedule.

MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  FULL FUSE  ·  2 LAYERS

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   12°F/ 7°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,400°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 30 min. Hold Fire
Decrease/Temp   3°F/ 2°C 750°F / 400°C 1 min. DO NOT LOOK
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

TOP of Flap (already fused) - match up the strips and see if the wire loops for the strips align as sometimes they move during the full fusing process.  Reposition if needed and then repeat the firing schedule above for all of the stripe pieces that will make your chimes.

Step 5:  Annealing: If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature and it is ready for the slump process. Use abrasives on any rough edges you need to smooth.

Step 6: Prepare Kiln for Slump Process: Take the kiln shelf out of the kiln. Using the kiln posts, set the kiln washed mold in the middle of the kiln. Place the full fused stripes on the mold. Make sure that you place each looped end of a fully fused strip at the end of the mold.  This way the ripples for all of the chimes will be the same.

Step 7: Slump Fuse: Use the below firing schedule to slump.

SMALL/MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  SLUMP

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   15°F/ 7°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,430°F / 777°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 30 min. Hold Fire
Decrease/Temp   3°F/ 2°C 750°F / 400°C 1 min. DO NOT LOOK
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

Step 8: Attach Chimes & Hanging Chain: Using a pair of pliers use at least one link of the chain to attach to the top portion of the flag.  Then attach the chain to the large loops at the top of the of the flag.
