Small Fused Project step-by-step instructions:

Clean Up Supplies:

· Rubbing Alcohol, Dish Washing Detergent
· Cloth with very little lint (old T-shirt)

Step 1: Remove Glass. To keep from breaking the precut pieces of glass, remove them from the package using an X-acto knife.

Step 2 - Preparation
· Clean Glass using Alcohol or Dish Washing Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of paper or cardboard.

· Clean & Prep Kiln:
    · Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer)
    · Cut Shelf Paper to fit shelf
    · Place Kiln Shelf Supports, Shelf and Shelf Paper into Kiln

Step 3: Put Glass project together

· Use Toothpick or plastic Cocktail fork to put 3 "tiny" drop of glue to adhere the Large white and small pink pieces of glass together. You do not need to use the glue but if you are making many pieces of fused glass  at the same time it will make you life easier when moving or positioning them in the kiln.

· Position each piece of glass evenly on top of each other and let sit for a few minutes.

Step 4: Note:  It is important to note that you need to make sure to touch all glass pieces by the outer edges to avoid finger oil or prints on the surface of the glass from your fingers when using decals.

Step 5:  Place into Kiln
Using Fingers around outer edges of the fusible glass project or better yet wear latex gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf paper/shelf.   Leave a minimum of 1/2" (13 mm) space between each project to ensure they do not touch and fuse together.

Step 6: Kiln Firing Process- Full Fuse

MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  FULL FUSE  ·  2 LAYERS

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   12°F/ 7°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,400°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 30 min. Hold Fire
Decrease/Temp   3°F/ 2°C 750°F / 400°C 1 min. DO NOT LOOK
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

Step 4: Use of Goldrush Pen on Glass
Outline the pink hearts in gold. It is important to keep your glass free of oil and from your fingers in order to have a clean surface to write on.

You can easily add real gold accents to fused glass jewelry or ceramic art using the Ferro Goldrush, gold paint pen. They apply like a felt tip marker and are compatible will any COE glass.

Tip: It can be difficult to hand draw a straight line on a small surface, try a small piece of stiff paper held tightly across the glass to act as a guide.  It is difficult to see the gold being applied.  Test you pen on a piece of white paper to see if is properly distributing and then apply to glass but resist going back over the same area twice as this can make the gold streaky or come out with a more matted brown appearance.

Tip:  Read our Tips and Tricks Instructions for more details on use. It is important to note that when applying to any colored or clear glass, it is difficult to see so you may want to create a paper template and fill in with the pen.

Fire on top of or between layers to 1050F - 1150F (bonds at 1112

Step 5: Firing your Fusible Glass Decals

This project used the Low Fire Glass Decals. Ramp up your kiln slowly while vented, until your reach 1,000 °F, then close your kiln and fire according the the full fusing schedule below.  Ramping slowly is much better than a quick fire to allow plenty of time for burn off and venting.

HOT GLASS TIPS (for Decals):

- Keep your decals stored in a dry place on their side and not on top of one another.

- Keep your Hi Fire Glass Decals and your Low Fire Glass Decals separately stored, perhaps in well marked envelopes.

- Mark each envelope with the colors/types as well.  Example:  Gold - Low Fire Glass Decals,  Platinum - High Fire Glass Decals, etc.

Increase/Temp  15°F/ 9°C 1,250°F / 690°C 3+ or 3- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool 15°F/ 9°C 1,100°F / 550°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid

Step 7: Prepare Fused Project
If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature  and it is ready to use. Use abrasives on any rough edges you need to smooth.  If you do find you need to do a lot of abrasive or use a grinder you may need to refire the finished piece to polish the edges.

Step 8: Adding Bail to hang

Attach the Bail using the Triolyse glue.  Make sure the glass is clean and dry and when placing it on the center, back side.  Maximum strength is reached after 6 hours.
