Small Fused Project step-by-step instructions:
Clean Up Supplies:
· Rubbing Alcohol, Dish Washing Detergent
· Cloth with very little lint (old T-shirt)
|
|
Step 1 - Preparation
· Clean Glass using Alcohol or Dish Washing
Detergent. Then dry and set aside on a clean piece of
paper or cardboard.
· Clean & Prep Kiln:
· Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer)
· Cut Shelf Paper to fit shelf
· Place Kiln Shelf Supports, Shelf
and Shelf Paper into Kiln
|
Step 2: Prepare Project for Fusible Glass Decals
Draw on the back side of the decal with a pencil for
the Pendant & Earring glass. Cut out decals and
remove protective tissue covering. Apply Gold Fiber High
Fire decal to surface of base
glass pieces and Silver Fiber High Fire to the surface of the Top
Glass.
It is
important to follow the instructions that come
with your decals! Keeping you glass free of oil from your
fingers is very important. Cut the decals leaving a
little white edge. Place in a small amount of clean
water and using a pair of tweezers take the decal out of
the water when it starts to curl. Using the side of a tooth
pick, hold slide the decal of the paper back and position
on the glass where you want it. It is important to remove
any air from under the decal. Some people like to
use a squeegee but the side of a tooth pick will also
work. If you use too much water the decal may
slide around (if this occurs, blot with the corner of a paper
towel to wick away the extra moisture). Let dry completely, over
night is preferable, before the final firing. Even the
smallest amount of moisture can steam the decal from the
glass surface, resulting in a partial transfer.
|
Step
3: Put Glass project together
· Use Toothpick or plastic Cocktail fork to put a
"tiny" drop of glue to adhere the black and
clear top piece of jewelry glass together. You do not
need to use the glue but if you are making many pieces
of fused glass jewelry at the same time it will make you
life easier when moving or positioning them in the kiln.
· Position each piece of glass evenly on top of each
other and let sit for a few minutes.
|
|
Step 4: Place into Kiln
Using Fingers around outer edges
of the fusible glass project or better yet wear latex
gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf
paper/shelf. Leave a minimum of 1/2"
(13 mm) space between each project to ensure they do not
touch and fuse together.

Step
5: Prepare Fused Project
If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened
until the next day so your project has had plenty of
time to anneal back to room temperature and it is
ready to use. Use abrasives on any rough edges you need
to smooth. If you do find you need to do a lot of
abrasive or use a grinder you may need to refire the
finished piece to polish the edges.
|
|
Step 6: Adding Bail & Earring Drop Loop
Attach
the Bail, the Earring drop loop to a small oval and
the Post with look to the other small oval on the
back of the glass using the Triolyse glue. Make sure the
glass is clean and dry and when placing it on the center,
back side. Maximum strength is reached after 6
hours.
|
|
|
Once
you are sure the glue had dried sufficiently, attach the
jump ring. Using a chain nose
or round pliers, securely grip the jump ring opposite to the chain
opening. Apply pressure at the opening using either
your finger nail of the opposite hand or another set of
pliers until the gap is wide enough to slide over the loop
of the Post. On the opposite side of the loop slide
the loop of the earring glass. Using flat nose
pliers, now close the gap of the jump rings.
Note: You can
link several jump rings together, attaching the post loop
and earring loops at opposite ands to create a longer
dangle. Using 2 long oval, you may find the earring hangs
more balanced with the post with loop centered versus at
the end of the oval so adding more links would be
necessary to achieve a dangle.
