 Slumped Glass Blue Bottle
Shooting Star Tray
Fusible Glass Project

(See Glass Tips & Tricks: How to Slump Glass Bottles)

Materials List:

1 Recycled Glass Bottle
(Note: Make sure you know the maximum width of your kiln shelf as this will be the maximum height of the bottle. Chose a bottle for the width for the use small is good for serving crackers and wider is better for a cutting-serving surface)

FUSING SUPPLIES:
Item# 41181
High Temp Wire 17 Gauge
Item# 42017
Shelf Paper 1 square foot
Item# 41048 Yellow Glass Frit (COE 96)
or
Item# 41032 Yellow Glass Frit (COE 90)
(Note: Use of COE 96 of COE 90 frit in small scatter quantities should not crack the bottle, only if dense or over a large area)
Item# 41326 Multipen Liquid Enamel Paint White (for stars)
(Note: Use of COE 96 of COE 90 stars will most likely crack the bottle due to the difference in the range of the COE for the float glass and COE 96. So we are recommending painting the stars on for greater compatibility)

Clean Up Supplies:
· Rubbing Alcohol, Dish Washing Detergent
· Cloth with very little lint (old T-shirt)

· Step 1 - Preparation
· Clean the glass bottle using Alcohol and/or Dish Washing Detergent as you want it clean and disinfected. You may need to use a bottle brush to clean out the inside and you should make sure that all labels and glue has been removed completely. Turn the bottle upside down and allow to dry.

· Clean & Prep Kiln:
    · Apply Kiln Wash (Shelf Primer)
    · Cut Shelf Paper to fit shelf
    · Place Kiln Shelf Supports, Shelf and Shelf Paper into Kiln

· Step 2: Prepare Glass

· Cut a piece of wire long enough to form a large U shape that will allow at least 1/2 inch to be inserted into the end of the bottle allowing at least 1 inch to hang outside the neck of the bottle.  (This will provide the option to hang it on a wall as decoration when not in use)

· Step 3:  Place into Kiln Using clean hands or yet wear latex gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf paper/shelf.   Make sure that your kiln shelf is level and the bottle is centered on the kiln shelf.  If the bottle wants to roll, place a very small piece of Thin fire paper under that location, fold if necessary to act as a stop. It is not recommended that any other projects are not on the same shelf or close because as the bottle slumps flat it will take up more space.

Note firing as slow as possible will help to eliminate air pockets in the glass.  Also because there are a large variety of glass used in common bottle glass the COE and thickness of the glass greatly and a slower firing process yields more successful results.  If the bottle does not completely slump, alter the temperature by 5 degrees and 5 minutes of soak time.

· Step 4: Kiln Firing Process- Full Fuse

MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  FULL FUSE  ·  2 LAYERS

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   12°F/ 7°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,400°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 30 min. Hold Fire
Decrease/Temp   3°F/ 2°C 750°F / 400°C 1 min. DO NOT LOOK
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

· Step 5: Prepare Fused Project for decorations
If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature  and it is ready to use.

Cut out a star pattern and trace it onto the bottle using your white multipen paint.  When dry come back and fill in with white paint. Let completely Dry.

Using Glastac Adhesive on the surface of the glass,  sprinkle the frit to create a trail after each star.

Using clean hands or yet wear latex gloves, pick up and place the project on the kiln shelf paper/shelf.

SMALL/MEDIUM PROJECTS  ·  TACK FUSE

Process Temp/Min Desired Temp Soak Temp Action
Increase/Temp   15°F/ 9°C 1,000°F / 538°C 1 Min. Remove Vent
Increase/Temp   Full Speed 1,350°F / 776°C 10+ or 10- Min.  Observe
Flash/Cool Highest Speed 1,100°F / 593°C 0 Min. Open & Close Lid
Hold/Temp   5°F/ 3°C 955°F / 513°C 30 min. Hold Fire
Cool/Temp   Do Nothing 100°F / 38°C N/A DO NOT LOOK

· Step 6: Optional Add Decorative & Functional Accessories

If this is a gift you may want to purchase a cheese spreader/cutter and/or add some raffia or ribbon to the neck of the bottle.
