If possible, leave the kiln sit unopened until the next day so your project has had plenty of time to anneal back to room temperature.
Step 6 – Grind Fused Dragonfly Rectangles
If necessary grind the fused apples so that all sides are the same size.
Step 7 - Foil Glass Pieces
Use 7/32” black backed copper foil to foil the fused dragonfly rectangles and zipper bevel pieces. Position the glass in the center of the foil, wrapping the entire piece. Overlap the foil where the ends meet about 1/8”. Use a fid or lathkin to burnish the foil. Burnishing smoothes the edges of the foil and adheres the sticky side of the copper foil tape to the glass.
Step 8 - Assemble and Solder
Fit all pieces together and hold in place with push pins. Use a flux brush to apply flux to the copper foil lines. Flux etches the copper foil, which allows it to accept the solder. Keep the pieces of glass from moving by tack-soldering each joint. Run a smooth, rounded bead on the front and back of the panel. Tin the outer edge of the panel.
See Soldering
Techniques in the Glass Tips & Tips Section.
Step 9 – Twisted Wire Frame
Use twisted wire to frame the panel. Cut 4 pieces of twisted wire the length of each side of the panel. Flux twisted wire and outside foiled edge. Lightly solder the wire to the panel.
Step 10 – Attach Hangers
Solder two ¼” preformed metal rings on each side of the top of the panel.
Step 11 – Cleanup and Patina
Clean with soap and water. Use black patina to turn the solder lines black and rinse with water and dry. A glass wax can be used if desired to polish and enhance the glass and color of the patina. Attach chain to the hangers.
